Housekeeping is often the first door into a hotel career, and it is also one of the departments where I have seen people grow the most. Guests may not always see the team behind a clean room, but every hotel knows how much depends on it. If you are thinking about this line of work, here is how the ladder usually looks and what helps you climb it.
The usual career path
Titles vary between hotels, and a small property may combine roles, but the general order looks like this:
- Room attendant: cleans and prepares guest rooms to the hotel's standard.
- Floor supervisor: inspects rooms, guides attendants and keeps the floor running smoothly.
- Assistant housekeeper: supports planning, inventory and training.
- Housekeeping manager or deputy housekeeper: handles rosters, budgets within the hotel's limits, and coordination with other departments.
- Executive housekeeper: leads the whole department, sets standards and works closely with the general manager and the rooms division.
Related areas such as laundry, public area cleaning and linen room management can also be part of the journey.
Starting as a room attendant
This is a physical job, and it is fine to say so. You are on your feet, you handle linen, chemicals and equipment, and you work to a routine. What the job teaches you is discipline, speed with accuracy and attention to detail. A fresher can start here after school or after a hospitality course, and many hotels train new attendants on the job.
What helps you do well
- Following a checklist the same way every time.
- Noticing small things such as a stain, a loose bulb or a missing amenity.
- Respecting guest privacy and handling lost-and-found items honestly.
- Communicating clearly with the front desk when a room is ready or needs maintenance.
- Learning safe use of cleaning products and equipment.
Moving up to supervisor
The jump to supervisor is less about cleaning faster and more about people. You will inspect rooms, give feedback without upsetting your team, and sometimes handle a guest complaint. Supervisors who get noticed are usually the ones who are reliable, calm under pressure and willing to teach. If you want this step, ask your seniors to let you help with inspections or training new joiners. It shows initiative.
Managerial roles
At assistant and manager level, paperwork and planning matter. You will deal with duty rosters, inventory of linen and supplies, vendor coordination, and maintenance follow-ups. Basic computer skills are useful here, as is comfort with spreadsheets and the hotel's own systems. Training skills also count, because a well-trained team makes your life easier.
Executive housekeeper: what the role looks like
The executive housekeeper is responsible for the quality, cost control and teamwork of the department. This includes standards, audits, staffing, coordination with other departments and often preparing for busy seasons and special events. The role takes years of experience, and nobody can promise a timeline because it depends on the hotel, the opportunities and your own performance. What I can say is that people who stay consistent, keep learning and treat their teams well tend to be remembered.
Skills worth building at every level
- Communication: in English and in the local language, whichever your hotel uses most.
- Time management: especially on busy check-out days.
- Teamwork: housekeeping works with the front desk, maintenance, laundry and food service.
- Basic computer use: room status updates and reports are often digital now.
- Willingness to learn: new products, new standards and new systems keep arriving.
Tips when applying for housekeeping jobs
- Mention the type of property you worked in and the number of rooms you handled, only if you know it correctly.
- Describe the tasks you did, such as inspections, training or inventory, not just the job title.
- If you are a fresher, include any training, internship or related work and say that you are keen to learn.
- Be ready for a practical test or a simple room-making demonstration in some interviews.
- Be honest about shift availability. Hotels run all days of the week.
Housekeeping rewards patience and pride in good work. Whether you are just starting or already supervising a floor, keep your resume updated and keep an eye on openings that match your next step.
