Syllabus reference: BHA105, Semester 1, Unit 2 (Housekeeping). B.Sc. HHA / NCHMCT notes.

In short: Sub departments of housekeeping include guest rooms, public areas, control desk, linen, laundry, uniforms and related support sections. Together they maintain room readiness, supplies and presentation. The Executive Housekeeper coordinates their work, but hotel size determines whether a function has dedicated staff, is combined with another section or is contracted out.

A guest sees a clean room and a fresh towel; behind that picture sits a whole network of teams that never meet the guest. For BHA105 Part B, the sub departments of housekeeping are the sections that share the department's work: linen, laundry, uniforms, gardens, floral work and more. Unit 2 of the syllabus asks for "areas of responsibility with a brief description of sub departments", so your answer must name each section and say, in one or two lines, what it does.

The syllabus does not fix one official list, because hotels organise housekeeping differently. This note therefore covers the sections most Indian and Gulf hotels run, in a form you can write quickly in the exam. Confirm the unit wording in the official NCHMCT syllabus PDF.

Where sub-departments fit in housekeeping

Housekeeping is led by the Executive Housekeeper, who delegates to assistants, supervisors and section heads. Some sections look after guest areas (rooms and public areas). Others are support sections that serve the whole hotel. Revise the reporting lines in our housekeeping organisation chart for large, mid and small hotels, and the broader duties in areas of responsibility of the housekeeping department.

In a small hotel one supervisor may handle linen, uniforms and laundry together. In a large city hotel, each section has its own head and staff. The functions stay the same even when the titles merge.

Brief description of each sub-department

1. Housekeeping control desk

The control desk is the communication hub. It receives room-status reports from floors, shares them with the front desk, issues and tracks keys, records lost-and-found items and logs guest requests and maintenance complaints. Many hotels staff it around the clock.

2. Guest room and public area sections

The guest room section is led by floor supervisors and room attendants who service rooms to the standard of the hotel. The public area section cleans the lobby, corridors, lifts, restrooms, back-of-house areas and often the restaurant floors outside service hours. Public areas need a team of their own because they are cleaned on a schedule, not on room status.

3. Linen room

The linen room stores clean linen, issues it against requisition, collects soiled linen, keeps stock registers and arranges condemned or damaged items. Staff count the stock on a regular basis and keep par levels so that rooms and outlets never run short.

4. Laundry

The laundry washes, dries, presses and folds linen and guest clothing. Hotels may run an on-premises laundry or use an outside contractor, and many do both. Guests' laundry and dry-cleaning requests reach it through the control desk or room service forms.

5. Uniform room and sewing room

The uniform room issues staff uniforms, exchanges dirty ones for clean ones and records who holds what. The sewing room (tailor room) mends torn linen, alters uniforms and makes curtains, cushion covers and other soft furnishings. Together they extend the life of expensive fabric and reduce replacement cost.

6. Horticulture and florist section

The horticulture team cares for indoor plants, lawns and landscaped gardens. The florist section designs flower arrangements for the lobby, guest rooms, restaurants and banquets. Both sections make a first impression that guests remember. Plants and flowers are also a regular area of Semester 2 study in BHA205.

7. Housekeeping store and pest control

The housekeeping store holds cleaning agents, machines, hand tools, room supplies and guest amenities, with issue and receipt records. Pest control is generally planned in advance and carried out by licensed contractors, with housekeeping coordinating access to rooms and areas.

Important points for exam answers

  • Say that sub-departments can differ by hotel size, and name at least six sections.
  • Give one function and one coordinating department for each section.
  • Mention the Executive Housekeeper as the head of all sections, and link the control desk with Front Office.
  • Draw a small tree with "Executive Housekeeper" at the top and the sections below.

How sub-departments work together: a day in the life

Imagine a conference group checking in at noon. The control desk receives the rooming list from the front desk and passes it to floor supervisors. Room attendants service rooms using fresh linen from the linen room, which in turn depends on the laundry to return clean stock overnight. The florist prepares arrangements for the VIP rooms, the public area team polishes the lobby, and the uniform room makes sure banquet staff have pressed uniforms. If a curtain hook breaks, the sewing room repairs it. No single section can deliver the guest experience alone, and that is the point examiners expect you to make in a 10-mark answer.

Housekeeping also coordinates with other wings of the hotel. For instance, the linen room supplies napkins and tablecloths for restaurants, and housekeeping teams clean areas around kitchens. You will see these links again in the inter-departmental coordination topic of the same unit.

As an illustrative Gulf resort comparison, gardening and contractor coordination may require more attention than in a compact Indian business hotel. Reporting lines vary, but Housekeeping still needs clear responsibility, follow-up and stock controls. These are teaching examples, not claims about a named property.

Separate clean and soiled linen, record quantities sent to an external laundry and count returns before adjusting stock. Outsourcing washing does not remove the need for a linen room or equivalent inventory control.

Career pointers: working inside a housekeeping section

Each sub-department is also a career door. A trainee can begin as a linen room attendant, a laundry operator or a public area cleaner, then move to supervisor and assistant housekeeper roles. Students who understand every section grow faster, because they can plan staffing, control stock and solve problems across teams. Our guide to housekeeping careers from room attendant to executive housekeeper shows the usual ladder and the skills each step needs.

Exam tips for sub departments of housekeeping

  • Likely 5-mark questions: list any five sub-departments of housekeeping with a brief description of each; explain the role of the linen room; differentiate laundry and linen room.
  • Likely 10-mark questions: describe the sub-departments of housekeeping with a chart; explain how housekeeping sections coordinate to keep rooms ready.
  • Keywords to write: Executive Housekeeper, control desk, linen room, par stock, on-premises laundry, uniform room, sewing room, horticulture, florist, pest control.
  • Diagram to draw: a tree chart from Executive Housekeeper to guest room, public area, linen, laundry, uniform, sewing, horticulture and floral sections.

Keep each description to one or two sentences. A table works well if the question allows it, because it lets the examiner see the function and the link at a glance.

FAQ

What are the sub departments of housekeeping?

Common sub-departments are the control desk, guest room section, public area section, linen room, laundry, uniform room, sewing room, horticulture, florist section, housekeeping store and pest control. Hotels may combine some of them.

Is the laundry a part of housekeeping?

In many Indian hotels it is, because the laundry works so closely with the linen room. Some large hotels run it as a separate unit or outsource it, so mention this in your answer.

What is the difference between linen room and laundry?

The linen room stores, issues and records linen. The laundry cleans and finishes it. They work in a cycle: soiled linen goes from the linen room to the laundry, and clean linen comes back.

Which sub-department is the nerve centre of housekeeping?

The control desk. It links floors with the front desk, manages keys and lost and found, and records requests. Many students write this as the "nerve centre" in exams.

Does every hotel have a horticulture section?

No. City hotels with small grounds may rely on a contractor or the florist section, while resorts and large properties often keep their own gardeners. Say "depending on the size and type of hotel" in your answer.
